In the Jungle...

n April 5th we took the ferry from Ko Samui to Koh Phangan. Koh Phangan is a small island, about 16 kms long. This is the location of the infamous Full Moon Parties, which was our main reason for going there, a south east Asia must. When we arrived to the island we began the room hunt which was proving to be very difficult as the island fills up real quick near a full moon and the next day was the full moon. We found a room and rented a moped for the week so we were able to explore the island more and drive to the parties rather than pay for taxi rides. We decided to stay in the middle of the island as we heard the south party area was VERY crazy and dirty due to all the partying there.
The first night at Koh Phangan we went to the jungle party... an experience indeed! The party is a short walk into the jungle. There were black lights all over hanging in the trees with glowing string making shapes in the trees. A huge glowing dj set up, a small bar, an area to get painted with black light glowing body paint, fire dancers, they had it all. After being there awhile we realized the fire dancers were in fact drunk people who were willing to play wih the fire ball things. As the night went on more and more "fire dancers" appeared... maybe in correlation with the buckets of booze consumed. We later found one of the "fire dancers" with a puffy burnt foot. Neither of us decided to try our fire dancing skills.. save that for a different day. When we got there we saw a guy about our age with no shoes and a tie dye shirt on and really short shorts walking through the party looking for something... his facial expression definitely led us to believe he was on a mission and very drunk. For the next few hours tie dye would occasionally storm by on his hunt for something, not talking to anyone. Towards the wee hours of the morning we decided to get a little food before we left. There was a small hut across a swamp so we went and sat at the table. While we were sitting there we were talking about how we hadn't seen tie dye boy in awhile and at that moment I saw him trudge right through the swamp (barefoot of course) up the mound of dirt and pass us. We about died from laughing that he was still walking around aimlessly on a mission. An hour or so later we decided to leave and on our way out we were talking about how it'd be the cherry on the cake if we saw him one more time. Sure enough we got out to the road and tie dye comes storming out of the jungle on the other side of the road, No idea what he was doing on the other side. He hopped on a moped and tried to put the key in it. We walked over to stop him. He didn't say a thing, but we realized he was trying to use his room key and he had no moped key. Some guys came out and we left him with them as they were trying to get a cab and this guy obviously needed one. It was a wild night but a total blast. Tomorrow night is the full moon party I can only imagine what's in store for us after tonight.
