Cambodia

Siem Reap 2/10-2/15
Well things were off to a great start when are bus was suppose to be in at 11 PM and we actually rolled in at 3am. Good luck looking for a room. Luckily when we stepped off the bus we met a German couple who were looking to split a tuktuk. Long story short, we didn't split a tuktuk due to lack of room but they were going to a guesthouse where the man running it said he would open the gates for them when they arrived.
They looked trustworthy so we decided to follow them hoping there would be and extra room. O yeah forgot to mention about the tuktuk Mafia... as soon as you get off the bus (once again the bus station is outside of the city) there are Tuktuks waiting to over charge you for a ride into town. We told the driver where we wanted to go and showed him on our map and in return he gave us this rather confused look; so we told him just to follow Lars and Betty (the German couple). Well when he hopped on his motorcycle we learned his plan. He tried getting us to go to some other hotel because he earns commission on any one he brings there. Sound familiar? if not go back to the Bangkok chapter and read our tuktuk exerience there. Well after much persuasion finally he gave up and delivered us to where we wanted to go!
The next day we ran into Lars and Betty went out to lunch with them. We ate at a restuarant with street side seating which we thought would be nice until the beggars started showing up. Everything from land mine victims to little children selling books and postcards. Teala and I almost bought a couple post cards from this little girl but decided not to. Afterwards Lars explained to us that you should never buy from the children because if they go home with a few dollars there hardworking father who doesn't make that much money will pull his kids out of school and put them on the streets to work while he sits at home.
The next day we went to the ancient ruins of Angkor Wat. What magnificent structures they built nearly 1000 years ago. It was all built with manpower and elephants. Angkor Wat itself is massive and every wall has carvings etched into the stone walls. We decided to hire a tuktuk driver for the day to drive us a around to all the temples to save time so we could do it all in one day.
Later that night Teala and I walked to the night market. Most of it is little shops selling tshirts, dresses and other souvenirs. I happen to stumble across a massage stand which were giving 30 mins foot massages for $2!! Of course I got one after walking the temples all day. Teala on the other hand decided not to... Her loss, it felt great.
The next day we spent walking around the market and stopped for lunch where we enjoyed some $.50 beers. $.50 cent beers what a great deal!!! Its like that all over Cambodia. Well anyways later we met up with Peter, a guy from Montana, and had a few more $.50 beers. When we were walking down pub street we ran into Nish and Marcus some guys we met in Vang Vieng. And later we ran into another girl, Rachel from California. We all caught up over some beers and grabbed some dinner. Good night! And now we are sitting on a bus on some really bumpy roads heading to Phnom Pehn.
